Campus Manual: Atmosphere, Effects & Notifications

Manual index·← Pets, Animals & Creatures·Recordings, Sharing, Resources & Records →

Multiverse Campus layers ambient weather, particle effects, and sound on top of the world to make it feel alive, and it keeps you informed with a family of small, dismissable notifications — nudges from your AI Agent, task updates, meetup reminders, call invites, and introductions to other students. This chapter covers both halves: how to control the look and feel of the world (and how to turn effects down for performance or preference), and how to read and manage every notification type you'll encounter.

The Atmosphere Panel

Where: ✨ button, bottom-left of the screen.

The Atmosphere Panel is your personal control center for ambient weather and particle effects layered over the world. Effects render as a full-screen overlay on top of everything else and don't block clicks or movement.

  1. Click the button to open the panel.
  2. Each effect is listed as a card with an emoji, name, and description.
  3. Click the toggle switch on a card to turn that effect on or off.
  4. While an effect is on, click ▼ Customize to reveal two sliders:
  5. Density — how many particles are on screen at once (label hints range from something like "Few" to "Blizzard" per effect).
  6. Wind Speed — how fast particles move (labeled per effect, e.g. "Still" to "Gusty", or "Drizzle" to "Downpour" for rain).
  7. Click Reset to Default on an expanded card to restore its density and speed to the built-in defaults.
  8. Click the button again (or its × in the panel header) to close it.

Your on/off state and slider values are saved to your browser automatically (per device/browser — they aren't synced to your account), so effects you enable persist across sessions.

Available effects

Effect Emoji Description
Cherry Blossoms 🌸 Sakura petals drift on the breeze
Snowflakes ❄️ A gentle winter snowfall
Autumn Leaves 🍂 Red and gold leaves tumble in the wind
Rain 🌧️ Moody lo-fi rainfall
Fireflies Soft glowing lights drift through the night
Confetti 🎉 A shower of colorful confetti
Shooting Stars 🌟 Stars streak across the night sky
Bubbles 🫧 Iridescent bubbles float upward
Matrix Rain 💚 Green code streams cascade down the screen

All effects are off by default — you opt in to each one individually.

Admin-forced effects

Admins/faculty can broadcast an effect to every connected client at once (for campus-wide events, seasonal moments, etc.). When an effect is being forced on or off by an admin broadcast, its card shows an admin badge and you can't toggle it yourself — the override stays in effect for your session until the admin turns it off or you toggle the effect locally (which clears the override and returns control to you). Admin overrides are never saved to your device; they only apply live.

Effect suggestions

Certain locations or interactions can pop up a small suggestion toast — for example, standing in a Rock Garden might suggest turning on Fireflies. The toast shows the suggested effect and offers Turn on or a dismiss (×). It only appears if that effect is currently off and not under an admin override, and it auto-dismisses after 8 seconds if you don't respond.

Room Effects & One-Off Overlays

Beyond the Atmosphere Panel's continuous weather, a few effects are one-time bursts triggered by items or interactions rather than a toggle:

These all come from inventory items or in-world interactions, not the Atmosphere Panel — see Items & Inventory for how to obtain and use them.

Novelty / cursed items

A few items carry their own unusual full-screen presentation instead of a simple particle effect:

Building Ambient Audio

Many buildings loop a quiet ambient audio track (wind, room tone, machinery hum, etc.) while you're inside them. This plays automatically and fades in/out over roughly half a second as you enter or leave a building with ambient audio configured — you won't hear an abrupt cut.

Personal Visual Effects (Cosmetics)

Some store cosmetics attach an ongoing visual effect to your character rather than a filter over the whole screen:

These are equipped from your cosmetics/store inventory, and — unlike Atmosphere Panel weather — they're visible to other players in the room, not just you. They are automatically thinned out or disabled under lower Performance Mode tiers (see below).

Placeable Lights

Some inventory items are lights you can place in the world (near you outdoors, or inside a building) to add colored ambient lighting. Placed lights support several animation styles — steady, pulse, gentle flicker, rainbow cycle, fast strobe, and a slow color-shifting "dance" — chosen when the light is placed. Nearby lights load automatically as you move around and update live for everyone nearby when a light is placed or removed. See Items & Inventory for how to obtain and place light items.

Seasonal & Daily Store Rotations

Two automatic systems change what's available in the campus store over time — you don't control these directly, but you'll notice their effects:

Performance & Accessibility

Where: your profile menu → Settings tab → Game Settings.

If effects, animations, or the world in general feel sluggish, you can trade visual fidelity for smoothness:

Performance Mode Effect
Full All effects on — full animation rate, full particle counts, smooth interpolation, furniture animations, native resolution.
Balanced Reduced effects, half animation rate, fewer particles, smooth interpolation and furniture animations kept on.
Performance Minimal effects, quarter animation rate, particles and furniture animation disabled, reduced canvas resolution.

Steps:

  1. Open your profile menu and switch to the Settings tab.
  2. Under Performance Mode, click Full, Balanced, or Performance.
  3. Optionally toggle Auto-detect low FPS — when enabled, the game watches your frame rate and, if it drops and stays low for a couple of seconds, shows a banner suggesting a lower tier (see Performance Suggestion in the notifications table below). Turning this off stops those suggestions from appearing, but you can still change tiers manually at any time.

Lowering the tier reduces trails, auras, contagious effects, particle-heavy Atmosphere Panel effects, and furniture animation — useful on lower-powered devices or if you find moving particles distracting.

The same Settings tab also has a Call Sound picker (the sound that plays when a proximity call starts) and, in the control bar, the SFX mute toggle described above for building ambience — both let you tune what you hear without touching call/microphone audio.

Your Social Battery mode (profile menu → Social Battery) doesn't change visuals, but it does affect what notifications reach you: setting it to Extreme Introvert makes you invisible to others and blocks incoming calls, which suppresses Call Invitation notifications entirely. See Settings & Accessibility for the full list of modes.

Notifications & Nudges

Multiverse Campus surfaces several kinds of proactive, dismissable notifications. Most auto-dismiss after a countdown if you don't respond, and most can be dismissed early by hand.

Needs Attention (Nudges)

Where: ⚡ button in the HUD (only visible when you have something outstanding).

The nudge system tracks small things you may have let slip — an unwatered plant, a quest with no recent progress, a broken learning streak, a promise an Agent is holding you to, a hungry pet, or a housing milestone waiting for you. Two related UI pieces show this:

Nudge task types

Task type What it means
Plant Care 🌱 A plant you own needs water or attention
Quest 📜 A quest you started has had no progress in several days
Streak 🔥 A learning streak has been broken
Promise 🤝 An Agent is following up on something you said you'd do
Pet Care 🐾 Your companion pet is hungry or unhappy
Housing 🏠 A dorm/housing milestone is ready to set up

You can turn nudges for any individual task type on or off from the Needs Attention panel (the 🔔/🔇 toggle) — this applies to both the panel list and the in-world Agent nudges/entry greetings for that type. Snooze pauses every type at once for a set number of hours (the panel button snoozes for 24 hours).

Task Status Toasts

Where: bottom-right corner, automatic.

When you're working a bounty/task with an Agent, small toasts appear in the bottom-right as its status changes. Each toast shows an icon, the task title, the Agent's name, a tick counter if the task has a step limit, and a short progress note if one was provided. Toasts stack (showing your last few) and disappear after 6 seconds, or you can click one to dismiss it immediately.

Status Icon Meaning
Claimed 🤝 An Agent has picked up the task
In Progress ⚙️ The Agent is actively working it
Submitted for Review 📋 Work has been submitted and is awaiting review
Completed The task finished successfully
Timed Out The task expired before finishing
Failed The task failed

Meetup Reminders

Where: center-top notification, automatic, for meetups you're attending.

If you've joined a meetup (study group, reading circle, peer support session, debate, dance party, hangout, etc.), you'll get reminder notifications as it approaches: 30 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes, and Starting Now. The 5-minute and starting reminders are styled with extra urgency. Each reminder shows the meetup title, location (room/building) if set, and organizer, plus a 20-second auto-dismiss countdown. Click Head over to walk to the meetup location (and enter the building automatically if it's indoors), or Dismiss to close it early.

Call Invitations

Where: top-of-screen notification, automatic.

When another student invites you into a call, a notification appears showing their name and a 60-second countdown. Choose Join to accept and enter the call, or Decline to turn it down. If you don't respond within 60 seconds, it auto-dismisses (equivalent to declining). Setting your Social Battery to Extreme Introvert prevents these invitations from reaching you in the first place.

Introduction Notifications

Where: notification card, automatic, plus the 🤝 Connections HUD button.

Agents periodically introduce you to other students based on shared skills, interests, projects, mentorship fit, or cohort. When this happens:

  1. A card appears naming the Agent making the introduction, the matched student (with avatar if set), the reason for the match, a match-quality bar (Potential / Good / Great / Excellent match), and — if the other student was introduced to you while you were offline — an async introduction badge.
  2. Click Connect to accept (shows a brief "Connected!" confirmation, and the matched student is notified), or Not now to pass (shows a brief "No worries" confirmation). Either action removes the card.
  3. If you don't respond within 30 seconds, it auto-dismisses.

Separately, the Connections button (🤝, with a badge showing your pending count) opens a panel listing every Pending introduction awaiting your response and every student you've already Connected with, each tagged with its match type (Skills, Interests, Project, Mentor, Cohort) and how long ago it happened. This is the reliable way to catch up on introductions you missed or dismissed notifications for.

Performance Suggestion

Where: top-center banner, automatic (only if Auto-detect low FPS is on).

If your frame rate stays low for a couple of seconds, a banner appears offering to switch you to Balanced or Performance mode. Click Switch to accept and apply the suggested tier immediately, or Dismiss to keep your current setting — dismissing doesn't disable future suggestions unless you also turn off Auto-detect low FPS in Settings.
