Overview

If you've ever thought "I have no idea what's on my wifi", or you've never once logged into your router, or your smart TV and doorbell camera are sitting on the same network as your work laptop, this is the session for that. We go through the router together: the admin password, automatic firmware updates, remote administration, filtering DNS that protects everyone in the house at once, and a guest network for the gadgets you don't trust. Then we find out what is actually connected, and you write the list down. Can't get into your router because the landlord owns it, the building manages the network, or the password was set years ago by someone who moved out? That's a supported answer, not a dead end, we work the paths that don't need admin access, and the one fix that gets you everything else back.

What You'll Master

  • What every device on your wifi is, and how to notice a new one
  • Why the router admin password is not the wifi password, and why that matters
  • Filtering DNS: one setting that quietly protects everyone in the house
  • Getting the TV, the doorbell and the speakers off your laptop's network
  • What to do when you can't get into the router at all

Where This Class Leads

What you leave able to do

  • follow a device hardening checklist
  • locate every device on your own network
  • produce a threat model for your own situation
  • design a household security posture for people who did not choose it
  • reconcile security with what people will actually do

How you show it. A requirement people were bypassing, the revised version they follow, and evidence the revision still closes the original threat.
