What You'll Learn
This Intro to Python class is designed for beginners to learn the fundamentals of Python programming, including how to work with data types, variables, functions, and control structures. Students will also gain practical experience by developing a to-do list application and a recipe-saving application, applying their knowledge in real-world projects.
Course Schedule
Week 1 8 sessions
Introduction to Command Line Basics, Python Installation, and Git Basics
Navigating directories, managing files, executing commands. Installing Python, pip, setting up virtual environments, introduction to the Python REPL. Setting up a project directory and running a simple Python script. Setting up Git, understanding repositories, and practicing basic commands.
Data Types, Variables, and Basic I/O; Control Structures
Understanding Python's data types, variables, and how to perform input and output operations. Learning if statements and loops (for, while) to control the flow of programs.
Introduction to Functions in Python
Defining and calling functions, understanding parameters and return values.
Lists and Dictionaries
Managing complex data with lists and dictionaries.
File Handling in Python
Reading from and writing to files, understanding file modes.
Building the To-Do List Application
Implementing core functionality: adding tasks, displaying tasks, and marking tasks as completed. Enhancing the application: updating task status in the file, and, if possible, adding additional features like task editing or deletion.
Advanced Functions
Cover default and keyword arguments, scope, and documentation.
Introduction to Modules and Libraries
Use standard library modules and third-party libraries.
Week 2 4 sessions
Basics of OOP in Python
Classes, objects, methods, inheritance, encapsulation, and polymorphism.
Practical OOP Concepts
Build a simple application using OOP, like a basic inventory system.
Project Day: Building a Recipe App
Use the concepts learned from the ToDo app to build a recipe saving application. This session focuses on applying practical development skills.
